Centurions | Welcoming and Belonging Symposium Series: Screening of The Road of Resistance with Producer Nico Giles

Join us for a special screening of Land of Opportunity: The Road of Resistance, Part I, the newest installment from filmmaker Nico Giles, who will be in attendance for a conversation following the film.

Inspired by Richard Rothstein’s book The Color of Law, the documentary examines the development of Highway 71 in Kansas City and the broader history of urban renewal policies that displaced more than 10,000 families in the area. Building on the themes explored in the original Land of Opportunity, Land of Opportunity: The Road of Resistance explores the long-term impact of housing, real estate and federal policy decisions on urban communities.

Beyond the screening itself, the goal is to create space for conversation. Nico will share insights into the research and filmmaking process behind the documentary, followed by an open dialogue where attendees can ask questions, reflect on the film’s findings and exchange perspectives on how this history continues to influence our communities today.

The evening will conclude with a casual happy hour and light bites, an opportunity to continue the conversation and connect with fellow Centurions and community members.

Meet the filmmaker: Nico Giles Wiggins is a writer, director and executive producer of Nico Giles Media, a mission-driven production company focused on developing documentaries and films featured on Netflix, PBS, ABC, CNN, Hulu, and other platforms. Wiggins received a regional Emmy Award for The Land of Opportunity, which aired on Kansas City PBS in 2020.
